What to pack for an autumn onsen trip in Japan

Packing for a ryokan trip is different from packing for a hotel stay, because the ryokan provides more than most travellers expect. Understanding what is already waiting in your room changes the calculation considerably and usually means you can travel with a smaller bag than you planned.

"Keiko Nishimura grew up in Nagoya and spent eight years at a regional travel wholesaler before founding Clever Magnolia in 2018. The agency grew directly out of planning her mother's first solo trip to Kinosaki Onsen. A project that took three weeks of research and convinced Keiko there was a real gap in how Japan's travel industry served older visitors. She has since visited over forty ryokan across twelve prefectures, always travelling as a guest rather than on a press trip. Outside the office, she tends a small container garden on her apartment balcony and is a committed reader of local history pamphlets picked up at rural train stations."

FAQ

Common questions

Do your trips work for travellers who use a walking stick or wheelchair?

Yes, and this is something we plan for specifically. Before recommending any property, we check corridor widths, step heights, bath access, and whether a Western-style bed is available. We ask about your mobility needs at the start of the planning process, not as an afterthought.

Can we pay in instalments rather than all at once?

We ask for a 30% deposit to confirm your booking, with the balance due six weeks before departure. For custom private journeys over ¥400,000, we can discuss a three-payment schedule. We accept bank transfer and credit card.
